29-10-2019·Synopsis: The first, most vital step in Peter Follansbee’s all-hand-tools approach to furniture making is to start with straight, riven stock. If you do that, you need just a modest-sized set of tools to do the rest of the work, such as a hatchet, a variety of handplanes, a handsaw, measuring and marking gauges, chisels, various carving tools, and more.
19-02-2008·I haven’t had much luck finding a complete No. 7 Stanley jointer – most of the ones I have purchased had ‘issues’ that were beyond my abilities to repair. Since my shop is relatively crowded, and the plane was less expensive than a powered jointer, I figured I would spend the money I was saving for a powered model on this beautiful tool.

19-05-2021·Benchtop jointers offer a compact and portable way to flatten out those less-than-perfect pieces of lumber so that when you start to build with them, they’re perfectly straight and even. These machines are small enough to fit on a benchtop and light enough to transport. But we’re never happy simply purchasing a tool and using it.

Hey everyone! I wanted to share with you my latest tool build, a Norris inspired 21-inch infill jointer plane. This is a project I’ve been working on for quite some time. All work on this plane was done with hand tools, all except for a wood bandsaw and a drill press.

On the other hand, the downside of hand tools like jack & jointer planes is the sheer time that seems to be involved. Hi Robert. It depends how flat the boards are to begin with. If they are relatively flat, you can probably still face joint them on the jointer. If not, you probably want to use a hand plane to establish one flat face, then plane the other side in your planer, and then flip and plane the side that you hand planed. Same thing for edge jointing.
15-02-2004·Until last year almost all of my work was done with hand tools – perhaps slow but satisfying work. This past year I was given a used table saw which has really speeded up some operations and I’m now considering getting a thicknesser and a jointer. I would like to get some opinions on the merits of a jointer vs. hand plane.
