Especially ff you are drilling into hardwood, they are really prone to snapping, but I’ve had this frustrating experience with using them for 2x4s too.
Screw size is measured in diameter. For example a 1/4-20 screw has 20 threads per inch and a diameter of 1/4 inch. All you need is a steel rule to determine the size and thread count of any screw. Once you learn how to do so, household projects will be much easier.

Measure the bolt length (not including the cap), and see if it’s closer to a fraction of an inch, or a nice and round millimeter length that ends in 5 or 0. Sometimes bolts can be a very specific length and this way might not always work, but you should at least know the length by now.
